A journey through time in Évora

Updated: Nov 18, 2023

For the last few days, we have been visiting one of our favourite places in Portugal - the city of Évora. It is steeped in history, and is a charming gem situated in the heart of Portugal's Alentejo region. This was a special trip for us as we took family on this adventure - their first time visiting the beautiful region of Alentejo.

For those who haven't visited Alentejo, it is the region situated to the north of the Algarve and it has a timeless charm. There are many fantastic places to visit, but Évora topped our list for our family's inaugural trip. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing a place where you can immerse yourself in its fascinating history.

Évora's history dates back to Roman times when it was known as Ebora. Its well-preserved historical center is a testament to the layers of history that have shaped this city. As you stroll through its winding streets, you'll encounter remnants of Roman architecture, Moorish influences, and the grandeur of the Renaissance period. Wandering through the cobbled streets is one of the best ways to enjoy the city's architectural wonders.

The Temple of Diana is one of the best places for a photo opportunity. This Roman temple has stood for centuries, and is a testament to the cities ancient past. It is also worth visiting the cathedral, and climbing to the top for a panoramic view of the city. If people-watching is your thing (who doesn't love doing that!) then head to Giraldo Square - a bustling place surrounded by charming cafes and historic buildings.

No visit to Évora would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. Alentejo is known for its hearty and flavorful dishes, with favorites like "migas" (a bread-based dish) and succulent pork.

Our family absolutely loved their first trip to Alentejo, and if you're looking for a destination that combines history, culture, and culinary delights, we believe Évora is a must-visit city in Portugal.
