Tucked into the Douro region of Portugal, the town of Lamego is home to one of the country’s most remarkable architectural and spiritual landmarks: the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. The sanctuary is especially vibrant during the annual Romaria de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, a religious festival held every September - and it just so happened that was the week we were in the area so it was great to experience it at its best!
Each September, Pilgrims flock to Lamego to celebrate with processions, traditional music, and local delicacies, making it a lively and meaningful time to visit. The sanctuary’s grand staircase is its most iconic feature, a Baroque masterpiece with 686 steps adorned with intricate tiles, statues, and fountains. The beauty of each level makes the climb well worthwhile - even in the heat!
Climbing this monumental staircase is an experience in itself, offering breathtaking views of Lamego and the surrounding countryside. While it may seem daunting, the beauty of the stairway and the sense of accomplishment at the summit make every step worthwhile. If you prefer a less strenuous approach, you can also access the sanctuary by car - but we think that's cheating!
At the top of the staircase stands the stunning sanctuary, a church dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies. Built in the 18th century, the sanctuary combines Baroque and Rococo styles with ornate altars, gilded interiors, and exquisite stained glass.
