Banho 29 - the highlight of the summer!

Last week, we had our third experience of one of our favourite local traditions, "Banho 29." It is a charming and unique tradition, held on August 29th, and offers a glimpse into the past, and a great opportunity for fun! Banho 29 has its roots in a time when Portuguese people who lived inland would make an annual pilgrimage to the coast for a sea bath. It was believed that a dip in the ocean on this day had healing properties and could ward off illnesses for the year to come.

There are also folklore connections to superstitions involving the devil. Traditionally, it was believed that the waters on the night of August 29th had special purifying properties that could ward off evil spirits and the devil himself. According to local legends, taking a swim at midnight would cleanse the body and soul, protecting individuals from misfortune and negative influences for the year to come.

While the tradition has evolved, the spirit of coming together for a seaside celebration remains strong. In Praia da Luz, it has grown into a full-blown festival featuring music, food, and community activities. As the sun sets, beach parties kick off with locals and visitors gathering for barbecues, and picnics. The aroma of Portuguese delicacies fills the air, while people of all ages enjoy the festive atmosphere. Traditional folk music and dancing are common, and there are live bands and DJs.

If you find yourself in the Algarve next August, don’t miss Banho 29. This year was the best we have experienced yet! Embrace the tradition, enjoy the festivities, and remember the superstition....if you join the midnight swim, remember you're not just enjoying a refreshing dip—you're partaking in a centuries-old ritual believed to keep the devil at bay!
