Castaway does Spain - Mérida!

Forgive us....we know our blog is all about Portugal, but over the next few weeks, we want to tell you about our magical road trip to Spain! We spent last year discovering fantastic off the beaten track places in the North of Portugal, and this year we decided to travel through some of the less talked about places in Spain.

The first stop on our road trip was the stunning city of Mérida. We hadn't heard much about it until we started researching for our trip. Sixty thousand people live in the city, which is not far from the Portuguese border, in the region of Extremadura.

It is a destination that brings the old Roman Empire back to life, and is a UNESCO world heritage site. It has a stunning Roman theatre (still in operation after 2000 years!), and is said to boast the best preserved Roman ruins outside Italy.

Mérida is simply beautiful. It has a wonderful relaxed vibe about it, and as it is only a 3 hour drive from Madrid, you should definitely consider visiting. the locals call it mini Rome, and I'm sure you can see from the photos that is no surprise!

Mérida....we think it may be one of Spain's best kept secrets!
