In the next in our series of blog posts about our Spanish road trip, we are taking you to Ávila. This magical place is the capital of the province with the same name, and is 100km North West of Madrid.
It is the highest provincial capital in Spain at more than 3700 feet above sea level. The city is most famous for its walls, which are among the best-preserved and most complete in Europe.
The fortifications have 82 towers, and more than 2000 battlements. We can't even begin to describe how impressive they are!
There is a 1,700 meter long walkway on top of the iconic walls which is open to the public (for a small fee!), and the views of the cathedral and the surrounding countryside around the city are well worth the trip.
This world heritage city is full of cobbled streets, and has a lovely peaceful atmosphere. It has been called the finest medieval remnant in Spain, and we just loved it....another spot we would highly recommend.
