From drought to downpour!

Something pretty unusual has been happening in the Algarve lately—rain! And not just a drizzle here and there, but proper, ground-soaking, dam-filling rain. After years of worrying about droughts and dwindling water reserves, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The region’s reservoirs (or barragems in Portuguese) are filling up nicely, and things are looking much brighter for the year ahead.

Just a few months ago, dam levels were worryingly low, but thanks to consistent rainfall in the last few weeks, the Algarve’s water storage has surged to 49% capacity! To put it in perspective, that’s enough to keep the region supplied for more than a year. Talk about a turnaround!

Of course, as anyone who has visited Portugal knows, rain comes with one little downside—those beautiful calçada pavements turn into slippery obstacle courses! One wrong step, and you might find yourself doing an unplanned (and very ungraceful) dance move. So, walk carefully, or embrace the slide!

The rain is a good news story here, but just because we’re no longer in full-on drought mode doesn’t mean we should waste water. Conservation efforts are still key to keeping things sustainable. But for now, let’s take a moment to enjoy this rare rainy season and appreciate the lush, green Algarve while it lasts - the sunshine is here today, and while we still have some rain, the blue skies are forecast to return next week!
