If you have been following our blog for a while, you may remember reading about Banho 29 last year. This event takes place each year on the night of August 29th, when people assemble in several places on the Algarve seafront and celebrate with a late night 'bath'! Living between Lagos and Luz, we have a couple of choices of where to celebrate, but we love the party that goes on in Praia da Luz.
The tradition has been going for many years, and there are various theories as to why it started. Some say it symbolises the end of summer. Others believe the devil walks free on August 29, and it is only safe to bathe in the sea at night. It is also said that swim is worth twenty nine baths!
Each year the celebrations seem to get bigger. In Luz alone there are three stages; with music for all tastes including traditional Portuguese music, and more modern tunes. The party culminates at midnight when the bravest people enter the water. It is a great excuse to celebrate, and yet another annual tradition that we love here in Portugal!
