A recent study has revealed that Portugal sits top of the table in the world of wine consumption rates. As wine lovers who witness how much is consumed in this country on a daily basis....this does not surprise us! Portugal consumes an incredible 600 million litres of wine a year, and while that is actually less than nations like France and Italy overall, it ranks 1st in terms of the amount per person!
If you have never visited Portugal, you may not know that the country has a long history of winemaking that stretches back thousands of years. It is part of life here; with restaurants serving a glass included with their menu of the day. Nothing is thought of having that and returning to work straight afterwards!
We always found it incredible how few good Portuguese wines are available to purchase in the UK, but we were interested to read that exports in Portuguese wines totalled 447.6 million euros in the first half of this year. That is a rise of 3.9% relative to the first half of 2022, so perhaps things are finally changing.
The Douro and Alentejo regions are where you will find the largest number of places dedicated to wine tourism, but there are vineyards all over the country, including the Algarve, and it is well worth taking the time to visit one when you are in Portugal.
