We're sure you'll agree that it's hard to comprehend that the horrific images we've all seen on our television screens in recent weeks are real. Footage of complete destruction and devastation as the conflict unfolds in Ukraine. On a recent trip to Lisbon, the strength of the Ukranian people was there for everyone to see as they lined up in their blue and yellow colours in front of the Arco da Rua Augusta in a show of solidarity with those suffering back in their home country.
Portugal is welcoming refugees with open arms. Providing Ukranian citizens with a special status that waives the need for a visa, and grants temporary protection. Supermarkets have collection points and are sending trucks to Poland to deliver vital supplies to those who now have nothing.
There have also been gatherings of support for those affected all across Portugal, as there have been throughout the world. In our hometown of Lagos. Ukranian flags and banners hang outside the police headquarters - the blue sky and yellow building providing a fitting background.
Candles have been lit outside churches, with Ukranian flags appearing everywhere. None of us expected to see scenes like this in our lifetimes, and our thoughts are with those who are suffering.
