Viewing the Volta!

We have been excited about the Volta ao Algarve since we arrived in Portugal. For those who are not cycling enthusiasts and may not be aware of it, it's a road bicycle stage race held annually in the region. Many riders use the race to prepare for the Spring Classics, and previous winners include the likes of Tour de France winners Geraint Thomas, and Alberto Contador.

2021 saw the first Portuguese winner for 16 years when João Rodrigues ended the race as the holder of the yellow jersey. We've never been lucky enough to be here in the country when the race is on, but this year was obviously different, and we were fortunate to see a bit of the race as it passed through. The great thing about watching a cycle race is that is obtainable for everyone. The sleepy Algarvian villages that the race passed through came alive with locals turning out to watch the stars of the future, and many already established pros.

The first stage ended in Lagos and the buzz in the town was just fabulous. After covid restrictions had kept people apart for so long it was great to see crowds come out to welcome the riders after their 199km stint in the saddle. A party atmosphere welcomed them and it was amazing for everyone to get so close to the riders and the entourage that accompanies them.

This year was the 48th Volta, and the race route totalled 795.8km divided into five stages covering most of the Algarve region. As well as a chance for young talent to emerge, it is also great to see Portuguese teams riding side by side with big international stars.

The photo of the podium above was taken after the first stage in Lagos, but it was Remco Evenepoel who ended up as the overall winner - the second time the 22 year old Belgian has won this race. If you find yourself in the Algarve in February, we highly recommend trying to watch at bit of the race as it passes through wherever you are staying. Lagos makes a great place to view it....and to grab a drink or enjoy a spot of dinner afterwards!
